How To Care for Your Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

I recently picked up a beautiful fiddle leaf fig tree at my local plant nursery, and I absolutely love how it looks in our master bedroom. I went with the medium size, but you can big, or little ones. There are usually lots of sizes available. JC & I decided that in order to make sure we took care of her properly, we should name her LOL. We ended up naming her Oregon..mostly because I have an issue with naming plants and animals after states? I don’t know where that came from but here we are. I’ve got some tips up my sleeve for caring for your own fiddle leaf fig tree.
It Needs Moisture
You can do one of two things – You either need to keep a humidifier close by to give it the high humidity and moisture it needs, OR you can mist it every 1-3 days. I keep a spray bottle close by and have been misting it every day to keep the leaves really plump, perky, and green.
It Needs LOTS of Light
We put our right by our bedroom window, which gets plenty of natural light throughout the day. Fiddle leaf fig trees are native to tropical Africa, so it really craves light! Make sure you have it in a spot with lots of light.
It Only Should Be Watered About Once a Week
A key to these trees is not to overwater them!! They need a watering about once a week, and it really shouldn’t be any more than about half a cup of water. However, pay attention to the environment your tree is in and if she looks a little drier than usual, add a little water. Monitor how it affects the tree if you over or under water and adjust accordingly. A general rule to follow is to “under” water and then watch the soil over the next couple days.
Make Sure You Get a Big Enough Pot
You certainly don’t need one too oversized, but enough to fit the current size of the plant, plus a few inches on the bottom for extra soil, and a couple inches on the sides. I planted mine in a ceramic pot big enough, then put that pot inside a cute wicker basket like this one.
It Will Grow Fast
This isn’t a tip so much as a “thing you should know”, but fiddle leaf figs are known to grow up to 30 ft! If yours is well taken care of, it can get really tall and outgrow your space, so just be aware it won’t stay small and cute forever! It may be good to place it in a spot where it has room to grow!
Overall fiddle leaf fig trees are too hard to take care, but they certainly take some attention! It was such a beautiful addition to my bedroom, I’m thinking about getting a couple more!
