Although I’ve only been raising chickens for a mere 4 months, I’ve picked up on a few things and done an insane amount of research! I wanted to share my absolute must haves for my chickens, and a few tips as to why they are my must haves!
We use the fans in the summer for two reasons – to keep the chickens cool in the heat, and to help keep the insects at bay. Insects don’t usually like moving air. The heater is for the winter, and will be mounted to the ceiling – this will help keep them warm in the cold winter temps!
The spray bottles are glass and are great for storing my homemade sprays for the coop! I have an insect spray that works MAGIC and a coop cleaner spray that is all natural. The mason jars are used for storage of scratch, seeds, grit, and oyster shells in the coop.
Our decoy owl‘s name is Hendrix and he’s a life saver. I actually have no idea if he works or not but he’s supposed to keep the hawks away. So far, we haven’t had a hawk problem, so I’m hoping it stays that way!
The feeder and waterer have also been life savers. They are hung up so they stay off the ground. The water and food stay clean and last about a week! The only real issue I’ve had is with the food getting wet when it rains, so it has to be replaced often. I’m working on a solution to that problem. But it’s still 1 million times better than feeders that sit on the ground and get poop and water in there!
Lastly, the book, The Chicken Chick’s Guide to Backyard Chickens was my absolute favorite chicken book and was SO informative. I would highly, highly recommend to anyone interested in chickens, or even those that have chickens, to read this one! She goes into a lot of great detail on a myriad of things.
Those are my picks! I’m sure I’ll have more to share as time goes on, but so far, it’s been smooth sailing with these awesome tools!
